Dawson hurried to catch up to Alexina as she stormed toward the sheriffâs office. He reached for the handle just before she did and opened the door for her.
âThank you,â she murmured as she brushed past him into the small one-room office. A jail cell ran the length of the back wall, and a desk was in the far corner. Wanted posters hung on the walls.
A man with a long, curly mustache and a receding hairline glanced up from his desk. âMay I help you, folks?â
âAre you the sheriff?â Alexina asked politely.
âI am, maâam.â He leaned back in his seat. âIâm Sheriff Washburn. And you are?â
Dawson stepped next to Alexina and provided the introductions. âMy name is Dawson Wayne, and this is my sister, Alexina Wayne.â
Rather than flirt with Alexina, as Dawson had been expecting, the sheriff gave them a curt nod. âHow may I help you today?â
Alexina spoke first. âWeâre the interim teachers, and we have been hearing whispers about the former teachers being abducted.â
âWhat exactly have you been told?â the sheriff asked in a cautious tone.
âThat the women were abducted by a bad man that likes teachers, and that they have disappeared without a trace,â Alexina shared in a shaky voice.
âI see,â Sheriff Washburn muttered, glancing between them.
âWe also heard that you have no suspects at this time,â Dawson added.
The sheriff leaned forward in his seat and grabbed a fountain pen. âMay I ask a question of my own?â
Alexina nodded.
âHow long have you been in town?â
âWe arrived yesterday,â Dawson replied.
âAh,â Sheriff Washburn said, dropping the pen back onto the desk. âYou are Pinkerton agents.â He pointed toward him. âI made you as a lawman as soon as you walked into the room.â He turned his gaze toward Alexina and chuckled. âAnd my window faces The Busty Woman saloon. I saw you dispatch your own justice on that drunkard.â
Alexina sat down in a chair in front of the desk. âGood. This will save us a considerable amount of time. Yes, we are Pinkerton agents. We were hired by Mayor Sunders to investigate the disappearance of the missing teachers.â
âGood!â the sheriff exclaimed. âI need all the help I can get. But first,â he pointed between them,â are you truly brother and sister?â
Alexina shook her head. âNo, but we are married.â
The sheriff wiped his hand over his mouth as he glanced between them. âMarried Pinkerton agents. Now Iâve heard everything.â
Dawson pulled out a chair and sat down next to Alexina. âWeâre staying at the cottage near the school, and we found fresh boot prints outside of Alexinaâs window this morning.â
âThatâs disheartening.â Sheriff Washburn frowned. âIâm glad that the mayor took my suggestion and nailed the windows shut from the inside. Those poor women.â
âCan you tell us what happened?â Dawson pressed.
The sheriff reached for a paper on his desk. He extended it toward him.
âHereâs my report. In both cases, the teachers failed to show up to teach one morning, and their cottage was in shambles. It was evident that the teachers fought hard against their attacker, but we found no indication of who it was.
